Fernanda López Aguilar
Attorney
Fernanda’s interest in advocacy emerged from her exposure to institutional failures in the rule of law in her home country of Honduras. As a bilingual lawyer with a background in policy analysis, she recognizes the value of a robust legal system with protections for all. Her own personal knowledge of the immigration process also allows her to appreciate the nuances and unique challenges that can punctuate the experience of moving to the United States. At the same time, her curiosity in politics and global affairs affords her a rich perspective into the themes that can contextualize this process.
As a legal intern at a non-profit agency in New Haven focused on helping refugees and other displaced people resettle in the area, Fernanda helped clients to apply for naturalization papers and asylum requests. As a Student-Attorney at the Human Trafficking Clinic at the University of Michigan, she represented victims of labor and sex trafficking and assisted with the development of the Human Trafficking Database. As the founder of a Honduran non-profit foundation to address the hurdles accompanying return migration as well as to aid asylum seekers to prepare their petitions, Fernanda is sensitive to the issues that prevail upon this complex system. From researching sentencing disparities in the criminal justice system to chairing her local American Civil Liberties Union chapter at Michigan Law to lobbying for anti-corruption panels overseas, Fernanda’s breadth and depth of experience grants her the ability to effectively build clients’ cases and advocate for their objectives.
Fernanda attended law school in Ann Arbor, where her studies in comparative asylum law and participation in an international law workshop and a colloquium on international refugee law all culminated in her successfully receiving her Juris Doctorate from University of Michigan Law School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Yale College, where she double-majored in Political Science and the Humanities and tailored her coursework around ethnic conflict, war, and transitional justice.
