No Place for Racism, Injustice or Abuse of Power

Dear Friends,

So many of the recent events have left us saddened as they have been a cruel and bitter reminder of the frailties of our society, and we are left grieving not only for what happened to George Floyd and those who have suffered a similar fate before him, but also for our civil rights and our country.

abogado de inmigracion bostonJust as our nation had made tremendous advancement towards embracing diversity by electing its first black President, it quickly lost the ground that had been gained with a government that was elected by a minority of voters and that has been fraught with egotism and bigotry, and where the lack of values and the language of intolerance and hatred has emboldened all those who believe themselves to be better than others to act on these words with the belief that there will be no consequences for their actions, and maybe even be praised for them.

So what are we to do? We march peacefully, protest and shout at the top of our lungs that there is no place for racism in our beloved country. We do this in the hope that our children see it this way too. Fortunately many children today, while they have been taught to be color blind by their parents and teachers, have not been taught to be indifferent to the plight of others.

In fact, there is a glimmer of hope that can be felt in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, as this has been one of the most diverse protests of our time. At least 700 cities and towns have held protests in the U.S [1]. so far and these demonstrations have even expanded to other countries [2] such as the UK, Australia, France, Germany and Spain. In those protests it is comforting to see people of all colors, ethnicity, gender and age united with the same message. We will not sit by and accept nor tolerate the mistreatment of anyone based on the color of their skin.

It is now clear that the hateful actions and sentiments portrayed by the Trump Administration and its followers are not supported by the majority of the people in our country.

Even the few opportunistic vandals who took advantage of the occasion to steal and destroy property, cannot detract from the message carried by these peaceful demonstrations.

Finally to those, like Trump, who have chosen to treat these peaceful exercises of Constitutionally protected rights with extreme force and violence we remind them of what President John F. Kennedy once said: “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

This movement that has started must be carried to the November polls and we must demand a change with the most powerful tool that any democracy has, our vote (register to vote here [3]).

At FitzGerald Law Company, we understand the civil rights of ALL people matter and our diverse multicultural and bilingual team of attorneys and legal professionals are committed to protect them and help with any legal issue concerning immigration [4], criminal defense [5] and personal injury [6] matters.
